We keep our fees straightforward and affordable. Your first two classes are always free.
What It Costs
There are three components to the cost of training at Prairie Aikikai. Annual membership covers your insurance and national affiliation. Practice fees cover the day-to-day cost of keeping the dojo running. Promotion fees apply only when you choose to test for a new rank.
年会費
Covers accident and liability insurance and your membership in Aikido Shimbokukai — an Officially Recognized Organization of the Aikikai Foundation (Aikido World Headquarters) in Tokyo, Japan. Due each year before the end of January.
稽古費
Covers the operating costs of the dojo — utilities, maintenance, and supplies. All classes attended on a single calendar day count as one practice. Students who train more frequently save by paying in advance.
昇級審査費
Applies only when a student chooses to test for a new rank. Covers the cost of the examination, the promotion certificate, and the new belt. Testing is never required — students advance when they and their instructor feel they are ready.
If two or more members of the same immediate family are active students, every member beyond the first receives off their Practice Fee. This discount applies regardless of which payment option each family member chooses (except Per Practice), and there is no limit on the number of family members who can participate. The first family member always pays the standard rate.

What to Wear
Beginning students are welcome to wear their own loose-fitting clothes — a t-shirt and long pants work fine. Prairie Aikikai maintains a supply of loaner equipment for anyone who needs it.
Once a student decides to continue — usually just before their first promotion — it is time to acquire a proper uniform. Aikidoka wear a variety of gi (practice uniforms), ranging from lightweight poly-cotton blends to heavier canvas or judo-style cuts. Students choose where to purchase their own, though Prairie Aikikai works with several suppliers and can often arrange pricing well below standard retail.
The same applies to the hakama (the pleated trousers worn by many Aikidoka) and to the weapons used in practice — the bokken (wooden sword), jo (staff), tanto (knife), and tanbo (club). Ask an instructor for a current catalog and pricing at any time.
A white cotton or poly-cotton jacket and pants. The standard training uniform for all Aikidoka. Can also be referred to as a Keikogi.
Traditional wide-legged trousers worn over the gi. Typically worn by yudansha (black belt ranks) and upper kyu ranks. At the Prairie Aikikai anyone may wear a Hakama.
The bokken (wooden sword), jo (staff), tanto (knife), and tanbo (club) are used in weapons practice. Loaner weapons are available; students may acquire their own at any time.
